Mrs. Hume

WELCOME!

Hello! My name is Miranda Hume and I am delighted to be your child’s teacher this year!

I have spent my last six years teaching a range of grades. My first two years were spent teaching grade one in Cochrane, then teaching grade four online. The following year, I taught a grade one and two combined class here at Elbow Valley ; those former students of mine are now in grade three and four. Last year, I taught grade three in Crossfield, and upon my return, I will be teaching a straight-grade two class.

In these first years of school, we learn so much; from growing in our reading and comprehension skills, to practicing collaboration and problem solving! This is such an extraordinary time to be learning and this year is even more exciting as we explore the brand new science curriculum. There will be many hands-on activities and experiments that I’m sure your child cannot wait to share with you!

Until then, I look forward to meeting you and your child and I am very excited about the year ahead!

Classroom Updates & Reminders

Our class uses ClassDojo. It is a platform where students earn Dojo Points when I “catch them” being kind, helping a peer, or exemplifying our character focus of the month. For every 20 points, students can redeem their points for a prize or a treat.

Furthermore, on this platform, you, the parents, can also be connected. You can see when your child earns Dojo Points in class, and you can also see photos and videos that I post to our Class Story — it is like our own private social media feed.

Check your child’s agenda for your personalized invite code. You can stay connected by downloading the app or bookmarking this tab.

Please note: do not purchase the "beyond the classroom" version.

Assessment

Updates on how your child’s learning in progressing can be found in PowerSchool. Each assignment will contain the curricular outcome being assessed and a description of the activity or task that we did in class.

Comments on next steps for your child will be found directly on the work that will be sent home.

myBlueprint

As an RVS student, your child automatically has a myBlueprint account. This is an incredible platform that acts a digital portfolio; it can house pictures of their work, notes on group projects, and reflections on their own learning.

We will use myBlueprint this year and you can view their work by logging in with the link that was emailed to you. If you have previously accepted a link from (one of) your child's teacher(s), please use that login information. If you have never accessed this site before, please look in your email (and your junk folder) for the invitation link.

Please reach out if you have any questions or are having any difficulties logging in.

Helping Our Classroom

Volunteering

Volunteer opportunities come in many forms. For any in-school or field trip volunteering, you must have a valid criminal record check on file. Please inquire with Mrs. Richards at the front office if you are unsure about the status and/or validity of your forms.

    • Field trips: volunteers will be requested when field trip information and permission forms go home.
    • Home reading: volunteers will help students exchange home reading books, ensuring that they are choosing from their “just right” options. Any extra time will be spent reading or practicing high frequency words with some of the students.
    • Classroom prep: volunteers will get an up close and personal look at some of the laminating / cutting / sorting jobs that get done for our classroom. This can be done in-school or in the comfort of your own home.

Scholastic

Ordering books or activity kits through Scholastic also helps our class. Every month, flyers featuring newly published titles, seasonal titles, and exciting book series will be sent home in your child’s agenda. For every order that is made with the Class Code, our classroom earns 20% in rewards, which I use to supplement our classroom library and choice time toys. Orders made with the Class Code receive free shipping to the school, and then the items are sent home with each student when they arrive. (Please let me know in advance if your order contains a gift that you don't want your child to see). I submit all orders on the last Friday of each month so that all items are shipped together. Orders can be made any time by visiting this website using our Class Code: RC135298.

Books

As student goals and interests change, I aim to keep our classroom library stocked with interesting and exciting titles. On this wishlist, you’ll find some brand new series that have been recommended to me, as well as some mentor texts that I aim to use with our social-emotional learning and character education lessons.

Classroom Items

As expected with any class, while we learn and explore and experiment, some of our resources get used rather quickly. On this wishlist, you’ll find some of our most coveted and loved items.
